Illegal Fishing in Georgian Waters

Tbilisi.19.11.04.Media News. Turkey and Ukraine are fishing illegally in Georgian waters. This issue was discussed on November 19 at a joint session of the Agrarian Issues Committee and the Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Committee of Parliament. The session established that Turkey is fishing without appropriate licences whilst Ukraine is exeeding the quota set by its licence.
According to Davit Iakobidze, Chairman for Fishery of the Ministry of Agriculture fishing is not regulated. Another problem is that it is unclear which institution should control fishing.
The Committee decided to create a working group, which will be given two weeks’ time to find material to give recommendations as to what institution should control such activity. Several Ministries have expressed an interest in the controlling of fishing, amomg them the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources and the Ministry of Economy.
