Together Against Torture

On June 26, 12 a.m. in Vere Park Human Rights Information and Documentation Center (HRIDC) and The Georgian Center for Psychosocial and Medical Rehabilitation of Torture Victims (GCRT) conducted a joint action in Tbilisi, Georgia. The event was organized in support of victims of torture.

Ucha Nanuashvili, the executive director of Human Rights Information and Documentation Center reported to the media: “Unfortunately torture issue is still relevant since the “Rose Revolution”. I am speaking about exercising the torture tools and methods in pre-detention isolations for the sake of getting evidence. The information is spread about the deaths of detainees as well. In addition to that, the statistical data of torture facts is not right and complete. When Human Rights Information and Documentation Center applied to Tbilisi jail #1 for the information of torture facts, they provided us with different numbers: the number of torture facts in prison #1 exceeded the data provided by the penitentiary department for the whole Georgia. It’s clear that the later, is trying to hide the real information”.

The aim of the action was to support the victims of torture and to inform the society that the issue of torture victims is still very relevant in Georgia. Torture issue in Georgia might be more relevant nowadays then it was before the “Rose Revolution”.

The action participants were given the booklets against torture.
