Ombudsman Meets Journalist Condemned for Embezzlement

Georgian Ombudsman Sozar Subari met journalist Tamaz Bakuridze, who was sentenced to 6.6 years in prison for embezzlement. The meeting, initiated by Bakuridze, took place in Batumi prison on February 9.

According to Sozar Subari, the journalist asked him to respond to the fact that the 45 day period, allocated for consideration of the journalist's appeal to Supreme Court of Adjara, has been violated. After the meeting Subari said he had already demanded the corresponding materials, the journalist is going to send the investigation materials to Tbilisi himself.

In 1999-2003 Bakuridze was former Adjarian leader Aslan Abashidze's Press Secretary and Head of local state TV channel.

Last year an Adjaran court sentenced Bakuridze to 6.6 year in prison for embezzlement of the local TV channel's funds.
