Patrol Police Officer Physically Assaults Citizen in Batumi

On the 12th of February, at approximately 5 p.m. Jemal Baramidze was stopped by the patrol police. Baramidze was drunk and had overtaken the police car. Despite charging the driver, Officer Mamuka Djincharadze also beat Baramidze up.
“They were driving very slowly and I decided to overtake them. I was driving at a normal speed, 60km/h. I stopped the car immediately. They then verbally assaulted me and started to beat me,” said Baramidze, and added that he hit his head on the stones.

“They put handcuffs on me and then continued beating me. My mouth was full of sand and blood,” recalls Baramidze.

Another officer and Baramidze’s passenger tried to resolve the situation; however, Baramidze was seriously hurt.

The Prosecutor’s Office has also launched a case against Baramidze. Despite his health conditions, he was detained at the department of Internal Affairs for two days. He did not receive any medical treatment during this time.

Baramidze has been released on bail.
