Council of Europe’s Parliamentary Assembly adopts resolution to support journalists

January 26, 2007

On January 25 Council of Europe’s Parliamentary Assembly adopted resolution on ''Threats to the lives and freedom of expression of journalists’’ which calls on the member-states to develop mechanisms for disclosing the reasons for attacks on journalists and limiting freedom of mass media.

The Assembly positively evaluated the fact that Paris branch of “Reporters without Borders” collected and handed over to the Assembly several thousand signatures appealing to investigate journalist Ana Politkovskaya’s murder.

Also, the resolution condemned murders of Turkish journalist of Armenian origins Hrant Dink and Ana Politkovskaya and attacks on journalists in Azerbaijan, Moldova, Ukraine, France, Serbia and other European countries during recent years.
