Members of Burjanadze’s Party Sentenced to Two-Month Pre-Trial Detention

March 26, 2009

Tbilisi City Court sentenced members of the political party “Democratic Movement for United Georgia” to two-month pre-trial detention.

The court discussed preventive measures for the members of Burjanadze’s party, Roin Bughashvili, Vakhtang Narsia, Mamuka Shengelia, Giorgi Tsertsvadze, Zurab Avaliani and Davit Gograchadze. The attorneys of the detainees requested 10 000 GEL bail, for each person; however the court did not satisfy their request. Abovementioned people, except Giorgi Tsertsvadze, plead guilty. They admitted that they had really purchased weapons from Dimitri Kinkladze, operative officer of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia. Giorgi Tsertsvadze claims that Mamuka Shengelia, the driver of Badri Bitsadze (husband of Nino Burjanadze) had assisted him to get in touch with Dimitri Shengelia.

Supporters of Nino Burjanadze are accused of illegal purchase-storage of weapons; as for Mamuka Shengelia, he is charged for the purchase of narcotics.

We would kindly remind the readers that nine members of the “Democratic Movement for United Georgia” were arrested on March 23 in Tbilisi and Batumi.
