Giorgi Chkheidze Protested When Representatives of the Public Defender Were Not Allowed to Meet Accused for Uprising in Mukhrovani Military Base

May 27, 2009

Deputy Public Defender Giorgi Chkheidze protested when representatives of the Public Defender and attorneys were not allowed to meet Otanadze and Amiridze, accused for the upraising in the Mukhrovani military base.

Chkheidze reported to the Interpressnews that attorneys of Koba Otanadze and Levan Amiridze, Olgha Giorgadze, Ramin Kvaratskhelia and Onise Mebonia contacted them. They stated that being in the hospital they were not allowed to meet the detainees. According to Giorgi Chkheidze the representatives of the Public Defender were at the hospital too who tried to meet the detainees. The guards of the hospital prevented them to meet the wounded people though the law did not allow them to block representatives of the Public Defender. The representatives of the Ombudsman drew up the protocol on the fact.

Chkheidze stated according to the law their representatives demanded to fine those people who did not allow them to implement their duties. In addition to that, attorneys were not allowed to meet their clients against the Criminal Procedural Code.

“We demanded the guard of the hospital to explain their behavior but they said it was their order. We tried to call or meet the head doctor of the hospital but in vain,” said Chkheidze, who added that Public Defender studies the detention of Otanadze’s brother and his family members.
