The Gamtsemlidzes Protest Release of the Convicted in the Murder

May 10, 2010
Policeman Vakhtang Abuashvili, convicted in the murder, was released – the father of the killed Giorgi Gamtsemlidze Jambul Gamtsemlidze reported about it.

He said two-year-imprisonment on Abuashvili expired on May 7 but he was released on May 6 –St. George’s Day.

Gamtsemlidze said Abuashvili served 2 years in prison for the murder which was caused by his inattentiveness. The family of Gamtsemlidze protest similar qualification of the accident and claim it was premeditated murder.

Opposition leaders also protested the release of Abuashvili one day earlier. On May 8, two years after the murder, the relatives of the Gamtsemlidzes and politicians gathered near the Rustaveli underground station in Tbilisi, at the scene of murder.

A leader of the Republic Party Tina Khidasheli said the case of Gamtsemlidze demonstrates the real face of the Georgian judiciary system. She said, two years are imposed on a person for murder, while 8-10 years are imposed for minor hooliganism on others. It shows that authority is loyal towards serious offenders.

An opposition leader Zviad Dzidziguri said similar protest demonstrations aim to assist the society to survive. “We support all similar demonstrations and we are obliged to participate in them. It is serious disaster when the law is government in the country and not justice.”
