The Attorneys in Georgia Hunger strike!

April 4, 2008
Malkhaz Jangirashvili, a Georgian Attorney, has been hunger striking for the 26 days. The hunger strike started on March 10.2008 and continues till now. He is protesting against the catastrophic situation facing the Georgian legal system, which is completely subordinated and under the control of the executive branch of the government. The judiciary system jumps to the political orders handed down by the government and makes legal various illegal steps of the government (zero tolerance, confiscation of private property, and provides justification for the cruelty inflicted by members of law enforcement bodies.

The profession of an attorney has lost its relevance in Georgia as a result. Evidence presented by them is ignored by judges as a standard procedure. Judges are normally subordinated to the office of Prosecutor General. The recent amendments to the law completely ignore the principle of trial transparency. Now has been forbidden to record trials, which deprives the attorneys from the possibility of proving instances and showing facts where trial protocols and procedures were intentionally falsified. There is no effective mechanism of reviewing unfair decisions of subordinated court within Georgia.

The attorneys of Georgia expressed support to Malkhaz Jangirashvili, and are joined in his demands. We expressed our solidarity with the hunger strikers every day in the tent that they have set up at the office of Public Defender of Georgia, and support the interchanging of strikers during their protest.

As the token of solidarity to Malkhaz Jangirashvili, the attorneys of Georgia have called for a warning strike on April 7. All trials in the Tbilisi City Court and the Court of Appeals will be canceled on this day. The executive board of the Association of Georgian Attorneys has publicized the information on the legality of the warning strike and why they support this activity back on April1.

We call all the local and international human rights organizations to fully back legal and fair demands of the Georgian attorneys to this action.
