Murder of Former Head of Adjara Office of Special Affairs has been uncovered, according to MIA

According to the statement of Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs, it has uncovered the case of murder of former head of Adjara Office of Special Affairs Dimitri Kordzadze.

According to MIA, Dimitri Kordzadze worked as a head of Main Department of Special Tasks of MIA during 2004-2007, #2 Department of Special Tasks of Zugdidi. On May 5th of 2010, in Batumi, at the crossroads of Tabidze and Aghmashenebeli streets, while driving, Dimitri Kordzadze’s car Toyota Hilux exploded. Dimitri Kordzadze died as a result. Badri Laparidze who sat next to him was inflicted with severe injuries. On the same day, the investigation began in the Adjara Main Department of MIA on the murder case of Dimitri Kordzadze.

“Investigation found that in 2009, the members of criminal world Otar Rogava and Temur Butbaia who were involved in the sell-out of cars stolen in the territory of Abkhazia were contacted by famous Abkhaz criminal Valmer Butba and a Parliament Deputy of Abkhazia marionette regime Slavic Vardania. These individuals introduced two Russian men to Otar Rogava and Temur Butbaia who are the officials of Russian Defense Ministry according to our information. Their meeting was conducted in the Abkhazia territory occupied by Russia,” – states MIA.
According to MIA, Russians passed a photo of Dimitri Kordzadze to Otar Rogava and Teimuraz Butbaia and asked them to ascertain his transportation route. 5 000 US dollars was given to them as an advance payment. Then Otar Rogava contacted his acquaintance in Batumi and asked to help him obtain information on Kordzadze. Otar Rogava and Temur Butbaia also met the relative of Davit Rokva Giorgi Gabunia and a friend Levan Kartskhava in Batumi. By their help the residence of Kordzadze and the route of his transportation were ascertained.

“In March of 2010, Otar Rogava and Teimuraz Butbaia met the above-mentioned individuals again in the occupied Abkhazia where they received additional 5000 US dollars and bombing equipment. The criminals were supposed to locate this device in Dimitri Kordzadze’s car. On May 4th of 2010, Rogava and Butbaia transferred the bombing equipment to Batumi where Butbaia located it under Kordzadze’s car. After Dimitri Kordzadze’s liquidation, the people who ordered the crime met again with Teimuraz Butbaia in the Abkhazia territory occupied by Russia in the city of Gali and gave him 42 000 US dollars.”

As a result of police operative-investigative measures, following individuals suspected in the commitment and assistance of crime were detained:  Temur Butbaia, Otar Rogava, Davit Rokva, Levan Kartskhava. Otar Rogava committed suicide in the prison. Giorgi Gabunia suspected in the complicity of crime is under search.

The criminal proceedings will start on the corresponding case on April 5, 2011.

MIA restrains from commenting on the circumstances and causes of Otar Rogava’s suicide.
