Chair and Activist of Gori Office of the Georgian Party Arrested

May 23, 2011

Trial on Kakha Ergemlidze, chair of the Gori district office of the Georgian Party, arrested by law enforcement officers, was held in Khashuri Court at night. His car was taken to a penalty parking area in Gori. Public Relation Department of the Georgian Party spread information about it.

Kakha Ergemlidze managed to call his party members and informed them that patrol police stopped him for having crossed the axial line but the police officers arrested him for the refusal to take alcohol test.

Kakha Ergemlidze claims that the police officers lie. “When patrol police stopped me, I called two members of our party in secret and they listened to my conversation with the police officers. They heard that I agreed on alcohol test and the test had negative result. Then, police officers requested repeated test and as a result they arrested me for resistance. I told them my party members were listening to our conversation and it was easy to disclose their false accusation; hearing it, they seized the cell phone from me.”

Late at night on May 22, the law enforcement officers arrested activist of the Georgian Party, initiative group member of the Gori office Davit Jarmelishvili.

According to the press-center of the political party, Jarmelishvili was traveling to Tbilisi by a taxi. The taxi-driver Valiko Iashvili said the police officers stopped them and took Jarmelishvili from the taxi to their police car; then they seized documents from him.

The party representatives said the detention of Davit Jarmelishvili and Kakha Ergemlidze is connected with their political activities.
