Georgian Dream’s Member Arrested in Senaki

July 10, 2012

Police officers arrested Romanoz Tskhvitava , member of the Georgian Dream, in Eki village of Senaki district, when he was going home after he had finished interviews in the frame of Kardakari Program [polls to check voters’ lists]. He was placed in pretrial detention setting under the charge of resistance to police officers and was sentenced to one-month imprisonment.

Party-members protested Romanoz Tskhvitava’s detention. “Officers of Zani police subdivision arrested Romanoz Tskhivatava without any grounds. They allege he was charged for resistance to police officers as if he was cursing in the middle of forest,” Murad Shamatava, head of Georgian Dream’s Senaki office said.

Detainee’s wife Nona Tskhvitava told humanrights.ge that police officers called her at home and informed about her husband’s detention.

Jumber Lashkarava, head of Senaki office of Kardakari Program” also commented on the fact. “Our government, as it usually happens, tries to get rid of our supporters. Tskhvitava was one of our active members and they removed him from this process.”

Representatives of Senaki police office do not comment on the incident and forwarded us to the press-center of the MIA.

Coalition Georgian Dream has lodged a suit at the court on Romanoz Tskhvitava’s detention. Lawyer Guram Kupunia said: “They imposed too strict punishment on him. So, we will lodge a suit in order to change the administrative imprisonment by fine or at least by seven-day imprisonment. Moreover, Tskhvitava has never been punished under criminal or administrative law and he is positively characterized by people. The court did not envisage these circumstances and imposed strict 30-day imprisonment on him.”
