Political Parties VS New Mayor of Kutaisi

October 10, 2012

On October 8, members of the Kutaisi office of the Christian Democrat Movement held briefing in front of the Kutaisi City Hall. They protested appointment of the National Movement’s member Besik Bregadze on the position of the city mayor.

According to CDM’s clarification the new mayor was appointed through procedural violations.

“Competition for the position was not announced. Besides that, members of the city council have not seen the action plan of the mayor-to-be. Bureau session was not held and he did not meet fractions of the city council. The law regulates those procedures that should be carried out when electing the city mayor. Because of the current situation in the city council, which followed Bregadze’s appointment to the position, we decided to quit the hall in protest,” said Davit Dvali.

Chairman of the New Rights’ Kutaisi office Mamuka Mgvdeladze is also against Besik Bregadze’s appointment to the position. He requests Bregadze to provide a report on nine-month activities of the city hall. Mgvdeladze also declared him responsible for the infrastructural projects which were launched in Kutaisi before elections but is suspended now.

“City Mayor is authorized to provide the city council with the report about nine-month activities of the City Hall. The report shall be provided within 10 days and it must be focused on ongoing infrastructural activities. I think, some projects (social and infrastructural) were launched only for the pre-election PR Campaign of one political party,” said Mamuka Mgvdeladze.
