Sozar Subari: Prison Personnel Made Mistake

Minister of Penitentiary Sozar Subari spoke about mistakes of the prison personnel with regard to death of a prisoner.

“People, who were obliged to watch camera installed in the cell, made mistake. There was warning that the inmate intended suicide. They did not pay proper attention to him. The preparation for the suicide lasted only 5 minutes,” said the Minister.

Subari said internal institutions are studying the accident to disclose the crime.

“4500 people work in the penitentiary system and they need re-training,” Subari said.

According to the Penitentiary Ministry, at 15:45 pm on December 24, 2012, alleged suicide occurred in Prison # 6.

Security division inspector found prisoner T.K. hung in the fourth cell of the new regime building.

Chairwoman of the penitentiary department Maia Khasia clarified that on December 23, 2012 prison doctor identified impending suicide symptoms, due to excess depression and immoral behavior he was transferred to the cell under 24hour camera surveillance. He was provided with psychiatrist for further consultation.

“Despite provided medical assistance, the personnel failed to save the convicted from death. T.K. was convicted under Article 179 –e (robbery) of the Criminal Code of Georgia. The prison personnel notified the family members about the accident. Simultaneously, investigative bodies were immediately informed about the accident and investigation was launched,” the December 26 statement of the Ministry of Corrections and Legal Aid reads.
