Irresponsibility Reigns in Calka

Tbilisi 20.03.05. Media-News. The heads of the Greek Diaspora recently had a serious discussion with the Ombudsman of Georgia about the oppression of Greeks in Calka.  Following the talks, employees of the Ombudsman’s office met with the Greek population in the region to look into the situation.

In a conversation with Pavle Kotanov, the head of the local Greek Diaspora, it became clear that irresponsibility and conflict thrive among the general population.  This conflict between residents has been further aggravated by a murder that was committed in the region on February 23.

According to Sozar Subar, the Ombudsman of Georgia, the events which recently developed in Calka are worsened by the unresponsiveness of the region’s law enforcement bodies.

On the morning of March 17 three bandits assaulted the Greek family of Liza and Iosman Kaloeroves in the village of Avralo. The bandits beat them severely and then stole 1000 lari and 300 dollars. According to the Kaloeroves, two of the bandits spoke Georgian and the third spoke Russian.

Following the daylight attack, 40-50 residents of the Armenian village Kizilkiri came to Avralo, where they vandalized the school and assaulted the music teacher and about ten Georgian teenagers.

Employees of the Ombudsman’s office visited Calka in the evening of the same day, meeting with the Kaloeroves and other village residents.  Giorgi Thusunava, head of the Common Council of Avralo, mentioned that the interference of the Armenian population in the incident, ostensibly to support the Greeks, has only worsened the situation.
