Inmate on the 10th Day of Hunger Strike in Jail №1

27/09/05, “Media News” - According to the non-governmental organization “Article 42”, the inmate Malkhaz Nishnianidze is on the tenth day of his hunger strike in Jail №1. Nishnianidze was arrested for illegal weapon ownership.

The prisoner demanded a meeting with the executive director of “Article 42”, Ketevan Kamashidze. At the meeting with Kamashidze, Nishnianidze said that he was illegally arrested and that he will continue the strike, until his demands are fulfilled. The court raised 3 months of preliminary imprisonment to 5 months, because adjustments were made to the investigation process.

Nishnianidze demands a fingerprint expertise to be made. The investigators refused to make this expertise, because no finger marks were found on the weapon.

Kamashidze said that the prisoner’s health condition is stable, but that if he continues the hunger strike, it would become worrying.
Representatives of “Aricle 42” also met Murtaz Sotiadze, the inmate who was moved to the 6th cell, where the living conditions are horrible. Kamashidze said that being in this cell is harmful for the inmate’s health and she asked to move Sotiadze to another cell. The Administration refused to do so. The members of the Administration added that Sotidze was not safe together with other prisoners and the decision was made out of security reasons.
