Court Orders MP to Pay GEL 50,000 in Slander Lawsuit

The Tbilisi City Court has ordered a lawmaker from UNM parliamentary minority group, Giorgi Vashadze, to pay GEL 50,000 (about USD 29,700) to Joseph Kay for calling him a “swindler”.
Guria Residents Intend to Cut Tangerine Trees Down

Minister of Agriculture Shalva Pipia visited Guria region. He said this year harvest of tangerine in Georgia amounted to 100 000 tons and only 17 000 tons were realized of it. He said that last year, only 10 000 tons were realized by present time and total amount of the harvest was 46 000 tons. Pipia said bad weather created problems in this direction. Farmers from Guria intend to cut down tangerine trees because of created problems.
Press-Conference on the Problems of Political Prisoners Arrested in Kintsvisi

On December 13, Human Rights Center’s representatives held press-conference on the problems of people convicted for the so-called Kintsvisi Case in the past. The Center’s representatives said current government does not try to investigate facts of torture and inhuman treatment in the prisons during previous years and does not intend to review hundreds of cases, on which court had passed illegal judgments.

On December 10, International Human Rights Day, representative of the Human Rights House Tbilisi visited homeless families sheltering the former building of the Railway Hospital. The main purpose of the visit was to issue free legal aid on the homeless people. Besides that, information booklet “Procedures to Provide Homeless People with Shelter” was produced and disseminated among beneficiaries on the place.

Appeal Court Acquitted Bachana Akhalaia

The Appeal Court upheld the non-guilty verdict of the City Court on former defense and interior minister Bachana Akhalaia, but former commander of the fourth infantry brigade Zurab Shamatava and Sergeant Aleksandre Gorgadze were sentenced to imprisonment for 3 years and 9 months. Despite the judgment, Akhalaia is still in prison because he was sentenced to pre-trial detention for the fourth criminal case.

Controversy Continues in Sagarejo

Members of the Sagarejo office of the Coalition Georgian Dream blame majoritarian MP Tina Khidasheli in sabotage. They told Human Rights Center that Tina Khidasheli makes unilateral decisions and does not consider opinions of other people. GD members claim the MP has made ultimatum to them - unless Giorgi Loladze is elected to the position of Sagarejo district governor, she will block all investments and projects to be implemented in Sagarejo.
